Marvel Ultimate Alliance (abbreviated MUA) is a action role-playing video game developed by High Impact Games and published by Capcom. It was released for the PlayStation 2 on November 18, 2006 in North America, and March 17, 2007 in Europe, and was released as a download on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network on December 18, 2006 and March 17, 2007, respectively. The game takes place in a realm where humanity is at war against its arch-enemy, H.A.M.M.E.R.H., and the game takes place over four discrete periods, "Inhumans", "Powers", "Dark Reign" and "War".
The game was released for the PlayStation 2, Xbox 360 and Windows in both North America and Europe, but was only released in PAL territories in Europe and Australia. It was Capcom's first major role-playing game to not be released on the PlayStation Portable, but was eventually released on the handheld on April 7, 2008 in Europe and Australia. A demo was also released for the Xbox Live Marketplace on December 17, 2006 and the PlayStation Store on January 18, 2007, and a demo for the Windows PC was also released on the Xbox Live Marketplace on December 17, 2006 and the PlayStation Store on January 18, 2007. The demo for the Windows PC is now available for download on Steam. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance features voice acting, in-game 3D models, background music, and an original story from various Marvel Comics characters such as the X-Men, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Wolverine, and Nick Fury, and takes place between Marvel: The Lost Dimension and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2.
The game is set during the "Dark Reign" storyline, which leads to "Secret Invasion". The characters can be unlocked through a "play as" system by completing the game's story mode in a particular order, or by using a bonus disc. After completing the story mode, the player can then be given a new "play as" option, in which they choose a character from the "Marvel Deck-Building Game", in which the player can build a team of playable characters and create an original team. The game has two modes, "story" mode and "survival" mode. "Story" mode is the traditional story-based play, which plays through several events, starting with "Operation Genome", and ends with "Secret Invasion".
